I haven’t written a whole lot about my life here as I’ve been settling into Chicago but well, that’s because I’ve been busy settling into my life in Chicago. The past thirty-something days (not that we’re counting) have been a whirlwind of unpacking boxes and tripping over boxes, holidays and holiday prep, getting acquainted with my smaller-than-the-old-one kitchen and a quick round trip to Pennsylvania for Christmas with my family.
I am still getting there – I need waterproof boots that will keep my feet warm on the constantly-snow-coated Chicago sidewalks and my cookbooks are still homeless in a box in the bottom of a closet somewhere. I have a desk that I’ve moved three times because I don’t really like it anywhere and I hung four pictures on my wall on my own. Major accomplishment.
How is it different here than it was in New York? In every way possible. I am incredibly lucky in that I moved here with an amazing network of blog friends who quickly became real life friends making my transition to the Windy City practically seamless. Since I’ve been here I laugh more. I drink more wine. And I sleep in layers. I forget where I put my keys every single morning and I’ve locked myself out of the apartment (but then, so has my mom).
My freezer is already packed with scones and foccacia bread and I’ve found a Thai take-out place that Iets you order online – perfect for phone-phobics like myself. I’m eagerly anticipating a trip to The Spice House with Jackie and I’ve hit the Chicago French Market (and for the most part was wholly unimpressed but that was just me).
I feel like I’ve turned a page – not to get too proverbial but this was the new start I was looking for, the change I needed to shake things up and begin anew. A different time zone, a more affordable apartment and a Starbucks on the corner.
Things are looking up.

You’re phone-phobic too?? I LOVE places that let you order food online!
LOL, I am a little phone-phobic too! I thought I was the only one. Glad that you are settling in and its feeling like home. Can’t wait to hear more about your life in the Windy City!
You are so freakin’ adorable! Now go put the flour in the frig!
So glad to hear that you an settling into life in the Windy City. I think it would make it so much easier to move someplace knowing that you already know people there.
It’s not home until the pictures are hung up! I wish I lived near other bloggers. Automatic friends are the best!
Yea for you! So glad you’re settling in well – can’t say I wouldn’t love any place that has a Starbucks on the corner though.
(I recognize those familiar yellow rubber spatulas.)
Lots of cabinet space and counter space, and a gas stove — you will make beautiful things in this kitchen! Can’t wait to come and visit.
You kitchen is cute! And I’ve been in my place since July and still have nothing on the walls, so you are way ahead of me there. Hope you love Chicago!
Wow congrats on moving and having such a postive experience with it! I’ll (hopefully)be moving somewhere entirely new for grad school in the coming months, and while it’s scary, I’m definitely hopeful that it will be a “new page” in my life.
so glad that to read that your transition has been pretty seamless!
Nicely done on the picture hanging. I’m glad your move has gone good and you’re settling in to Chicago. Happy New Year!!
Love the kitchen! Congrats on finally getting settled. Moving can take alot out of you!!
And we are oh so happy to have you:)Also- I still need an apartment tour AND flour in the fridge? Really??
Small Kitchen suggestion: buy a cookbook stand that will bring your cookbook or print outs from online up off the counter space. I just got a nice one for Rachael for Christmas since our kitchen is very small and its amazing how much space it can help save. Treat yourself to one today for your birthday!
I didn’t realize that you moved! So exciting!
