SALADS

Salad is a composition of ingredients majorly put together in a serving tray or bowl, eventually mixed with salad dressing. Salad is primarily accepted by many, as it contains a lot of nutritional value.  

One beautiful thing about it is that you can never exhaust its uniqueness since it involves different recipes, so one can be creative to choose whichever is suitable for every season.

Another beautiful thing about salads is that they are so colorful and attractive that you are just tempted to eat them. There are different types of salads and various salad dressings. In this article, we’ll be discussing different types of salads and salad dressings.

1. Fruit Salads 

These are colorful mixtures or combinations of fruits put together, either fresh or canned. It is sometimes served in liquid forms or syrup and can be served as an appetizer, a side dish, or dessert. Examples are Minty pineapple fruit salad, Two-berry fluff salad, and many more.

2. Wedge Salads 

These salads are made on a wedge of lettuce, just as the name connotes, and typically have a blue cheese dressing but could be switched if you are not a lover of blue cheese. It could be a bit sneaky to eat, but you do well to get your knives and forks ready.

3. Green Salads 

Green salads, also known as green leaf or garden salads, are not only a refreshing choice for a light summer lunch but are also packed with essential nutrients. If you’re looking to shed some pounds, incorporating green salads into your diet can be a beneficial step. These salads typically feature a medley of vegetables like spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, celery, avocado, green beans, parsley, radishes, and more. To boost the protein content, many people opt to include healthy additions like boiled eggs, white shrimp, Weathervane scallops, and cheeses. This helps strike a balance in the nutritional profile of the green salad.

4. Dinner salads 

Dinner salads are also known as main course salads and are generally called Entrée salads in the United States. Examples of dinner salads include chicken salad, Cobb salad, Chinese salad, Michigan salad, etc. For dinner, salads, seafood, many kinds of cheese, and a tiny piece of poultry meals.

5. Bound salads

Bound salads are categorized with thick condiments such as mayonnaise. You can be sure that one serving of bound salad will hold its shape when served in a bowl with a scoop. Examples of bound salads include chicken salad, tuna salad, coleslaw, egg salad, potato salad. Bound salads are also used as sandwich fillers. Pasta salads are also bound types of salad as they are used at hangouts/picnics.

6. Rice and pasta salads

For these types of salads, rice and pasta are the primary ingredients in making them. This makes it easy to make ready and appear so attractive to eat. Pasta salads are an excellent lunchtime meal and also as a side dish. Examples of pasta salads are macaroni salad, Israeli Couscous Salad, Malaysian cuisine, etc.

7. Dessert salads 

Dessert salads have numerous ingredients, which are highly embraced at some cafes, buffets, and even dished at parties. They are made with jellos, fruits, whipped toppings, vegetables, mayonnaise, etc. These salads are sweet and mostly do not contain leafy greens. They also can be made earlier than when needed since they can last longer. Examples of Dessert salads are snickers salad, cookie salad, etc.

Salad dressings

Salad dressings are the sauces used to eat salads. These dressings may be drizzled over the salad, especially with a tossed salad in which the dressings coat the ingredient equally, and it may also be put by the side of the salad. 

There are two main types of salad dressings used in western culture:

  • Creamy dressings: this usually involves mayonnaise and fermented milk products like buttermilk, sour cream, yogurt, etc. 
  • Vinaigrettes: this is based on the mixture of vinegar and salad oil mostly flavored with salt, spices, herbs, sugar, pepper, and other ingredients. 

Buttermilk-based ranch dressing is the most famous type of salad dressing in the US. The Caesar-style and vinaigrettes dressings also follow closely behind. In France, vinaigrettes are the traditional dressing. However, in central and eastern Europe, mayonnaise and sour cream are the most predominant. In the eastern Mediterranean and southern Europe, the dressings are used for salads, vinegar, and olive oil. While Asians commonly use sesame oil, soy sauce, citrus juice, and fish sauce to dress their salads.

Salad is one of the most globally consumed foods. It has different types and can be consumed at different times of the day. Different types of salad dressings are prevalent in different parts of the world, showing how popular and well-loved the meal is in itself.
