By starting off slow and moving onto bigger portions and more complex foods as you can tolerate them, you’ll ensure that you don’t throw too much at your body before it can handle it.

Some of the first foods you should try, according to Dr. Jeffrey Campsen, a contributor to the University of Utah Health, are clear liquids. These are things like broth and juice that you can see through. Because it’s common to get an upset stomach after surgery, you don’t want to eat anything that might exacerbate this problem or be hard on your body if you wind up losing your lunch.

Once you’ve been able to keep some clear liquids down, you can move onto some more solid foods. Try to keep these things pretty bland and not too hot. Things like bread or soup are good things to start off with. 

Try A Smoothie

After a surgery, many people feel like they don’t have an appetite for a few days. However, it’s important that you give your both the fuel it needs to start healing you and get your proper functions back up and running. 

Especially if you’re finding it hard to want to eat, Jennifer Whitlock, a contributor to Very Well Health, recommends trying a smoothie. You can put so many different things in smoothies that can be great for recovery, including plenty of fruits, fattening dairy, and even some protein powder. 

Soft Foods With Plenty Of Nutrition

Depending on the type of surgery you had and how you seem to be recovering in the first few hours or days, it might be best if you stick to soft foods for a while. But while you might be tempted to just eat whatever’s most convenient, you need to pick foods with plenty of nutrition.

To help you with this, Karla Walsh, a contributor to EatThis.com, shares that some of the best soft foods to eat after surgery include eggs, mashed fruits or vegetables, yogurt, pasta, soup, pancakes, avocado, and ground beef or sausage in a sauce, like sloppy joes or meatloaf.
