While following the orders of your doctor is the best way to ensure that you don’t push yourself too much too soon or forget to take actions that will help you heal faster, there are certain things you can take on on your own that can aid in getting you back on your feet. One of these things is being careful about what you eat and how you fuel your body.
To show you just what you can consume that will be most beneficial, here are three foods to eat after surgery to help speed your healing.
Despite what type of surgery you’re having, one of the most common side effects from going under the knife is constipation. Because of this, it’s vital that you eat plenty of fiber in order to keep yourself regular. If you allow constipation to become a big issue for you, your recovery could be much more pain than it ordinarily would be, along with increasing the chances of landing you back in the hospital.
To combat this, Jennifer Whitlock, a contributor to Very Well Health, advises that you eat foods that are high in fiber. Some of the best ones include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and cereals.
A big help to healing your body will be ensuring that you’re consuming the right vitamins, minerals, and nutrients while you’re recovering. According to Bethany Fong, a contributor to LiveStrong.com, vitamins A, C, D, E, and K are particularly important when you’re trying to heal your body. Some of the best sources for these vitamins include things like sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, carrots, broccoli, milk, cheese, eggs, berries, citrus fruits, nuts and more.
Speak with your doctor about which vitamins you should be sure to be getting daily and then find out which specific foods are rich in those vitamins.
When trying to heal and keep your immune system running smoothly, it’s crucial that you’re fueling your body with the right amount of protein from the right sources. But after you’ve just undergone surgery, you might find that you don’t have the taste for big cuts of meat or other traditional sources of protein. If this is the case for you, Dr. Christine Rosenbloom, a contributor to EatRight.org, advises that you find more palatable protein sources, like eggs, cottage cheese, or yogurt. You could also try drinking cow milk or almond milk as a great source of protein as well.
